General's Secretary Message

The Tibetan Homes Foundation was established in 1962 with the vision of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, born from a profound sense of compassion and a commitment to protecting the future of Tibetan children displaced by the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1959. In the face of immense adversity, His Holiness envisioned a sanctuary where these vulnerable children could find not only physical shelter and sustenance, but also the means to preserve their cultural identity and build fulfilling lives.

The Tibetan Homes Foundation’s mission is multifaceted, focusing on the holistic development of each child. This includes providing a nurturing environment that fosters intellectual, emotional, and spiritual growth. At the heart of our efforts lies the preservation of Tibetan culture, tradition, language, and religion – the fundamental elements of Tibetan identity. At the same time recognizing the importance of equipping children for the modern world, the Tibetan Homes Foundation is also deeply committed to providing access to quality modern education. We believe that empowering children with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complexities of the 21st century is crucial for their individual success and the continued flourishing of the Tibetan community.

The Tibetan Homes Foundation administers a comprehensive educational framework, centered on its main school located in Mussoorie, which provides education up to the 12th grade. This institution offers a complete range of academic disciplines, including science, commerce, and arts streams, affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The Foundation has three branch schools, situated in Rajpur, Gohri Mafi, and Dekyiling, all of which are similarly affiliated with the CBSE. Furthermore, to facilitate the pursuit of higher education following the completion of the 12th grade, the Tibetan Homes Foundation grants scholarships for both college and diploma programs.

More than just an institution, the Tibetan Homes Foundation functions as a family. It provides a place where children find love, support, and a strong sense of belonging. For over six decades, this non-profit charitable organization has served as a beacon of hope, diligently preserving Tibetan cultural heritage, positively transforming the lives of thousands of Tibetan refugee children, and empowering them to become responsible global citizens. This enduring achievement is a direct result of the dedicated and sustained efforts of all staff members, both past and present, coupled with the unwavering leadership of successive General Secretaries.

Looking to the future, we remain steadfast in our mission to provide home, education, and cultural foundation for Tibetan refugee children.

Finally, I wish to convey my deepest appreciation to our valued sponsors, donors, philanthropic organizations, and alumni associations for their unflinching support and generous contributions, which have been instrumental in our continued success.

With warm regards and best wishes
Tenzin Choklang (Mr.)
