SOS Family Homes

“Home sweet Home” is a very common phrase popular worldwide and here too in THF when we say Homes or Khymtsang, we refer to our sweet and warm family homes where our children live and are taken care of by foster parents or Mothers. The children in these homes are those little beings who have undergone a lot of physical and mental trauma – separated from their loved ones, risked their lives, battled against all odds and have reached under the umbrella of Tibetan Homes. More than anything else these children   yearn for love and a sense of belonging and this comes naturally from the foster parents to the children. The working of the home is unique in itself, the day to day work of cooking, washing and cleaning is done by the children themselves aided by the parents and this forms an integral part of their everyday life. Duty charts are made involving all senior children in the household chores and for the younger children a match up of an elder brother or a sister is made. In this way the younger children are looked after by their respective elder brother or sister - washing of clothes, bathing, school needs, assisting with home-work are few of the things the senior children

have to do for the young ones. This generates a sense of belonging to the family and more important is a process of a complete upbringing. The values of love, care, responsibility, honesty, hard work and compassion are all a part of the growing up process in these family homes.

The age of the children in these home varies from 6 to 16, which comprises of children attending the Montessori school and up to grade IX. After completing their grade IX at school they are then shifted to the Senior Boys and the Senior Girls Hostel.

Presently we have 30 large homes and 11 smaller homes making it a total of 41 homes. The Larger homes cater to around 35 - 40 children while the smaller homes are in the pattern of SOS family Homes with 10-12 children. The larger homes are taken care of by foster parents while the SOS homes are taken care of by the SOS mothers. The larger homes are scattered around happy valley and majority of these homes were once old British cottages bought  in

the early years with support from different individuals and organisations-Swiss aid to Tibetans, SCF, TRAS and others. As for the 11 SOS family homes, they have been built by SOS KINDERDORF INTERNATIONAL. The two hostels can accomodate around 200 senior boys and girls. The hostel enables the students to live more independently and prepares them for their eventual departure from THF.
